How does it work once arrived in France?

Welcome in France!

 

 Now don’t forget to:

  • put the date of travel on your pass
  • reserve your seat when it is compulsory (TGV, TEOZ and Lunéa)
  • stamp your pass and reservation at the stamping machines on the platforms

Once in the train station if you have any questions you can ask them at the information desks placed on the platforms.

The Stations

The stations are the first step in your trip and reveal the global architectural style of the city and the region. In train stations you can find a lot of services like kiosks, newspapers, restrooms, restaurants…

Please note that in some cities you have several train stations. The best example is Paris where there are the 6 following stations:

  • Gare du Nord (all destinations to the North of France)
  • Gare de l’Est (all destinations to the East of France)
  • Gare de Lyon (all destinations to the South of France)
  • Gare Montparnasse (all destinations to the West of France)
  • Gare d’Austerlitz (all destinations to the Center of France)
  • Gare Saint Lazare (all destinations to Normandy and Paris suburb)

Beware that in Paris train stations are far from each other and you will have to take the subway (the approximate time between two train stations is 30-45 minutes).

The domestic trains

  • The TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) is the most famous train in France. It will bring you to the French big cities. For example you could reach Marseille, from Paris in only 3 hours (seat reservations are compulsory).
  • The TEOZ train reaches and links big cities in France. The TEOZ is available on few lines which are not yet linking by TGV. It is a very design and comfortable train (seat reservations are compulsory). 
  • The TER (Train Express Regional) is the best way to run through the French Countryside. It links every little towns and villages of France (no reservations needed). 
  • The Intercités train is linking main regional cities to Paris and main regional cities to another one (no reservation needed). 
  • The Lunéa trains are the night trains of SNCF. Travel the night, enjoy the day! (berth reservations are compulsory)

 

International trains

With your France Rail Pass you can have discounts on International trains like Eurostar, Thalys, Lyria, Elispos.

 

On board

If you are taking a train with a seat reservation you have to find your coach and then your seat. Come at least 15 minutes before the departure of your train to have time to find your seat. After that, you just have to seat comfortably and wait for the departure of your train.

Once on board a train manager will check your seat and you will have to present him/her your pass, your seat reservation and your passport.

Now you can relax and unwind on your seat. Please enjoy your travel and if you need anything like a hot/ cold drink, a meal, a newspaper you can go to the coach bar. You can play board games with your children take a coffee with your friends, read a book or just enjoy the landscape right before your eyes!

Please note that Children aged between 4 -11 years pay for 50% off the adult fare.
Children under 4 travel for free.
The France Rail Pass must be validated within 6 months from the date of purchase.
