HISTORY

A thousand years with a smattering of history

Founded in 997 at the foot of a hill that served as a lookout post on the Seigniory of Rodoard, Cannes started out as a small fishing harbour overrun with reeds. It was called "Portu Canuae" and faced the Lérins Islands, known since Antiquity under the names of Léro and Lérina. In 999, one year before the awful Year One Thousand, a fortress was constructed, the "Castrum Marcellus", ancestor of the current Suquet.

"Portu Canuae" had its "kan" - its "high point" in Celto-Ligurian terminology, hence the name Cannes! Having experienced Spanish, English and Saracen invasions, the "royal" incarceration of the enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask, the spectacular breakout of Marshal Bazaine, the armies of Charles Quint warring against those of François I, not to mention the landing of Napoleon Bonaparte, Cannes' destiny has always had a cosmopolitan flavour…

From 1834, Cannes became one of THE places to be! Across the Channel, the east of the French Riviera had acquired a great reputation for its climate after a former Royal Chancellor, Lord Henry Brougham and Vaux, decided to spend winter here... and ended up staying thirty-four years! Like an ambassador inviting his acquaintances to Cannes, Lord Brougham unveiled this new sanctuary of prosperity and elegance to kings, queens, princes and dukes, and to major writers and artists including Prosper Mérimée, Guy de Maupassant, Domergue, Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo, Stendhal, Picabia, Renoir and Picasso.

And so the first tourist season was born, from autumn to winter. With the advent of paid leave, the season switched to spring and summer. In the days when the first trains were conveying Queen Victoria of England, Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, and the kings and queens of Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Spain, Cannes was embellished with sumptuous palaces, mansions, big luxury hotels and venues for festivities. The 20th century transformed the City of Princes into a leading light of tourism on the French Riviera.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TOWN

Suquet and the old harbour
The "Suquet" is where Cannes began. We suggest you start your tour of Cannes with the old town and its famous Suquet. You can reach it from various angles, taking steeply sloping narrow streets, crisscrossed with picturesque flights of winding steps where the pedestrian is king. Visit the ramparts, the Musée de la Castre, the square tower and the church. Admire the view over the town, the harbour, the Croisette, the Lérins Islands and a substantial portion of the Bay of Cannes. Cannes' soul lies at the foot of the old town: Forville market with its belt of food shops (butchers, charcutiers, fishmongers, bakers, wine merchants, etc). The old harbour unfurls below the Suquet. The oldest section, "Quai St Pierre", dates from 1838. The harbour accommodates old sailing ships as well as speedboats. In September, sailboats set out from the harbour for the "Royal Regattas".

La Croisette
In 1850, the Croisette was nothing more than a path running parallel to the sea across sand dunes. La Croisette is now an avenue renowned for its prestigious shops and the luxury hotels that have established Cannes' history, including the Carlton, the Martinez, and the Majestic.

Beaches
On the shores of one of the most beautiful bays in the world Cannes' beaches offer seven kilometres of fine sand between the Estérel and the Lérins Islands, and a horizon where the blue of the sky blends with the blue of the sea. Flooded with generous sunshine even in the low season, they symbolise lazy days and a gentle pace of life. The public beaches of La Bocca and Le Mourre Rouge are interspersed with a series of private beaches, with a more urban feel, on Boulevard Jean Hibert and La Croisette.

the villa domergue in cannes

HERITAGE

Architecturally remarkable public buildings and religious monuments trace out different periods of Cannes' historical past. Villas and huge residences, some examples of which are mentioned here, hark back to the 19th-century heyday of holidaying foreigners. Most have since been converted into apartments, nestling in grounds closed off to the public.

Musée de la Castre
Located in the heights of Old Cannes, the medieval château thrones over the Croisette, the bay and the Lérins Islands. It was constructed towards the end of the 11th century to defend the burgeoning town. Dungeon tower; Sainte-Anne's Chapel (Romanesque style); and water tanks. The Musée de la Castre is inside the château. It showcases art from Oceania, the Americas and the Himalayas, Mediterranean antiquities, Oriental and Provençal paintings, and an outstanding collection of musical instruments from all over the world. Musée de la Mer.
Out at sea, opposite Cannes, on the nearer of the two Lérins Islands, a Fortress towers over the water. Constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries on the edge of a forest of pine and eucalyptus trees, it was used as a state prison then, after the French Revolution, as a military prison. The Museum of the Sea occupies the main building of the fortress. It harbours Roman water tanks, the cell of the Man in the Iron mask, a Huguenot memorial, and collections of terrestrial and underwater archaeology (Roman and Saracen wrecks). It also hosts temporary exhibitions.

La Malmaison
La Malmaison was originally built as a gaming room and tearoom, housed in a pavilion adjoining the Grand Hôtel. Construction of the ensemble commenced in 1863 under the direction of architects Vianey and Blondel. The Grand Hôtel was inhabited until the end of the 1950s, when it was demolished and then reconstructed in 1963. La Malmaison is the only original part to have survived. The Town of Cannes organises temporary exhibitions here, paying tribute to renowned artists.

Villa Domergue and gardens
This residence and its gardens were designed by artist Jean-Gabriel Domergue, who drew inspiration from Venetian palaces. The artist's finest paintings adorn the walls of the villa. Magnificent sculptures by his wife embellish the gardens, which are of Florentine inspiration. The villa was inaugurated in 1936.
